Mitt Romney Smokescreen: NAACP Convention

Did Mitt Romney "use" the NAACP Convention to reassure his Right Wing voting base?

[Sure seemed like he did!!]

I couldn't wait to hear what Mitt Romney would disclose during his speech at the NAACP Convention this morning because a little birdie told me he was going to say something incautious... Outlandish... Off-the-wall... Once the devilish words exited his mouth, however, I must admit that it seemed to me Romney had actually thrown caution to the wind and instead decided to embrace the opportunity to disclose what would amount to an off-the-wall comment aimed at the NAACP's African American audience.

As the words, "That includes Obamacare", escaped Romney's lips while spewing out a list of government programs he wanted to eliminate, my immediate reaction was two-fold. First, I was certain the audience would not appreciate his blatant willingness to get rid of President Obama's health reform law; and second, the fact that Romney referred to the Act as Obamacare said more than if he had held up a picture (as you know is supposed to be worth a thousand words) showing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) stamped with the word REPEALED in gigantic red letters while the GOP and their Republican allies laughed in the background... all the while... stuffing their Italian suit pockets with enlarged multi-figure dollar bills!

While including Obamacare in his list of programs to rid, Romney stated the words quickly as if he wanted to throw them out there and then forge ahead as fast as possible... Initially, I wondered if the audience had been stunned because the listeners seemed to have a delayed reaction... When their reaction was finally apparent, however, they affirmed my belief the audience would not appreciate Romney talking about deep-sixing the ACA as their disagreeing response issued him a few rounds of recurring BOOS that lasted several seconds.

As I stood, toothbrush in hand, creating toothpaste foam with each up and down stroke against my teeth, my gut told me... He (Mitt) is using the NAACP!  Using the NAACP to talk to his Right Wing base and to show them he would put forth his agenda even in front of voters he hoped to sway to vote for him -- no matter what those voters' opinions were regarding President Obama or his health care law [Obamacare!]. How curious! This is the same Mitt who normally changes his points of view to appease, NOT annoy, the audience before him on any given day... during any particular moment... So... Why wouldn't I think he was rattling this African American audience on purpose? That he was using them as a smokescreen to speak to his base??

[Not to worry, NAACP audience... I'm really talking to my base voters about getting rid of Obamacare... He! He! He!]

In my opinion, Mitt Romney will do and say just about anything to get elected... to attain power in the greatest land on earth... But not because he wants to help the United States of America! His main interest seems to be furthering his own personal agenda!

In all fairness, and despite my initial reaction to Romney's statement, I would like to have been able to give him the benefit of the doubt... I would liked to have been able to consider the notion that my reaction might have been incorrect... Deep inside, however, I knew my gut reaction was the correct and appropriate one. Later, in listening to different news platforms, my belief was confirmed when professional political analysts said the same thing I had been thinking.

One of those professionals was the Reverend Al Sharpton during his broadcast of Politics Nation that airs on MSNBC at 3:00 PM Pacific time. What I liked about Reverend Sharpton's report was that in addition to him airing Romney's words, he also showed the audience's reaction. Members of the audience said things such as, "He's really in trouble now", and "He never should have said that!"

Thus... I say... If you were not using the NAACP as a smokescreen to send a message to your Right Wing followers... Then... Mitt... What were you doing???
