The Debt War Continues - July 27, 2011

Tuesday nights NBC news misled the public when they reported congressional sites crashing in a way that made it seem as though Speaker Boehner had a direct influence on the crashes.

This was a misleading lie...

The truth and the fact is that the sites crashed after President Obama asked the public during his prime time address, that occured on Monday night, to contact their congress persons and make their voices heard.

Reporting that Speaker Boehner had an influence on the public outcry was an attempt to make the Senator seem as important/influencial as the President in regard to getting the people to act. This farce is right in step with showing Boehner in a setting with flags, bigger than flags shown during Obama speeches, in order to make the speaker seem presidential.

On another note, despite reports that the United States has longer than August 2, 2011 to raise the debt ceiling, Gene Sperling, an assistant to the President, said that we must raise the debt ceiling by that date because that is when we actually run out of borrowing authority.

Another option for raising debt ceiling if Republicans and Democrats cannot agree on a plan...

Lawrence O'Donnell of MSNBC has been reporting for months that all necessary to increase the debt ceiling is to fill in numbers on a form... a single piece of paper! This method has been used many times when O'Donnell worked in the Senate; and in fact, he reports that increasing the debt ceiling in this manner was often done at the very last minute - that it can take a mere half an hour or less to complete.

As far as the 14th Amendment goes, for those who wish the President would take this route, all President Obama would need to do would be to enact an Executive Order. An Executive Order to increase the debt ceiling would mean he would not need the approval of the incooperative congress. What is more is that the Executive Order would also erase any Republican efforts to take away Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. President would, in affect, provide himself the clean bill he had initially said he wanted.

Eric Cantor Walks Out On Budget Talks
Eric Cantor walked out during budget negotiations overseen by Vice President Joe Biden today, June 23, 2011. Following Cantor's exit, Jon Kyl, the only Republican remaining in the meeting, got up and left as well.

The purpose of the talks was to come to an agreement that would lead to increasing the debt ceiling so as to pay America's bills. While discussions revolved around benefit reductions to middle and low income Americans were on the hot seat, the two Republicans remained involved in the talks. As soon as the discussions switched to means for increasing taxes on the wealthy, the Republican Senators left the room.

Republicans have a contract amongst the party that prohibits them from discussing tax cuts with the Democratic Party. The purpose of the contract is to deter Republican lawmakers from taxing the wealthy and from taxing large corporations - including those that ship jobs overseas.

Maine's attempt to push child labor
After removing a mural depicting the plight of laborers, Maine is now pushing to encourage child labor in that state. The intent is to pay children less than the minimum wage for the same work older minimum wage workers accrue. Whereas the regular minimum wage in Maine is $7.50, that state would authorize employers to pay only $5.50 to kids working for up to 24 hours a week. 3.31.11
