Government Shutdown Talks At White House Day 2
President Obama said additional progress was made from meeting with Senators Harry Reid and Boehner and that the staff will be working around the clock this evening to try and close a deal. The president said he is not ready to express further optimism because there is still ironing out to do.President then went on to remind public that government workers would not be able to work, receive paychecks, or assist the public should a shutdown occur. In addition, other services that would be interrupted would include FHA loans for prospective home buyers and passports for those seeking to travel.
The President said economic damage would mount very quickly and a dragged out shutdown could take the country back into a recession. This would take the US backwards simply because Washington could not get its act together. Businesses, farmers, veterans, 800,000 employees would suffer as a result of a government shutdown.
Machinery of shutdown is starting to move, President said he told Boehner and Reid that he expects an answer as to whether or not deal is made first thing in the morning. He hopes there will be good news that will allow him to assure public schools and such that they will be able to continue running, the President added.
